What Is The VCDPA?
Virginia's Consumer Data Protection Act (CDPA) was enacted in March 2021 and took effect on January 1, 2023. Businesses that collect and process personal data will be governed by the law, giving Virginia consumers better control over their data.
Virginia consumers have the right to access and delete their personal data collected by businesses. Businesses must also provide clear and concise privacy notices describing what data they collect, how it is used, and who it is shared with. In addition, the law requires businesses to implement reasonable data security measures.
The Virginia privacy law represents a growing trend towards greater privacy protection for individuals, similar to the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
